When the Sikorsky S-61 first took to the skies on March 11, 1959, it redefined what a rotorcraft could do. Developed for the U.S. Navy to counter the growing threat of Soviet submarines during the Cold War, the S-61, originally designated the HSS-2 and later the SH-3 Sea King, it was a landmark design. It was one of the first anti-submarine warfare helicopters to use turboshaft engines, and it pioneered the concept of combining the hunter and killer roles into a single aircraft. The Sea King quickly proved its worth, and in late 1961 and early 1962, a modified HSS-2 shattered multiple helicopter speed records-.
But the S-61’s story doesn’t end with the Cold War. Its rugged, amphibious design with a boat-shaped lower fuselage that allowed water landings made it ideal for a wide range of missions. From search and rescue to offshore oil transport, from military operations to humanitarian relief, the S-61 became a global workhorse. It was built under license by Agusta in Italy, Mitsubishi in Japan, and Westland in the UK, and it served in the armed forces of nearly 25 countries.
Why does this matter today? Because the S-61 is still flying and it is still vital. In 2026, Coulson Aviation Canada deployed an S-61 Type 1 NVG Helitanker to support British Columbia’s wildfire season, equipped with a 4,000-litre belly tank, foam and gel injection, and night vision capabilities. The aircraft has already responded to its first wildfire of the season, proving that this 1950s design remains one of the most capable heavy-lift helicopters in existence. The S-61’s ability to operate day and night, combined with its proven reliability, makes it indispensable for critical missions.
Our s-61 gen fam course takes you inside this legendary helicopter. You will explore the airframe, the twin General Electric T58 turboshaft engines (1,400 hp each), the five-bladed main rotor system, and the unique amphibious features that set the S-61 apart from other helicopters. The course covers the systems that keep this aircraft flying safely, from the landing gear and hydraulics to the electrical and fuel systems, as well as the essential safety precautions and servicing requirements that any mechanic working on an S-61 must know-.
This Sikorsky S-61 systems training is aligned with FAA ACS (Airman Certification Standards), EASA Part-66 standards, and ATA-104 compliance requirements. Whether you are a mechanic maintaining an S-61 fleet, an engineer preparing for type rating, a pilot transitioning to rotary wing, or simply looking to expand your expertise, this course gives you the foundation you need.
The S-61 is more than a helicopter. It is a symbol of engineering excellence, a testament to the power of good design, and a reminder that great aircraft never truly retire, they just find new missions.
